ALBUQUERQUE’S “THE GRANT PLANT” TAKES IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Local Grant Writing Partnership Tops $3.5 Million In Funding for NM Nonprofits

Albuquerque, NM (February, 2008) — The Grant Plant, a local, sister-owned grant writing partnership dedicated to providing superior and affordable resource development services, announces that it has received over $3,500,000 in funding for New Mexico nonprofit agencies.

The funding will be used by various organizations to improve the quality of life for New Mexico residents, including ACCION New Mexico, the CNM Foundation, the Great Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Life Options Academy, Mission: Literacy, PB&J Family Services, Presbyterian Ear Institute, and The Loan Fund.

Among the firm’s recent successes is a grant award from The Daniels Fund for over $94,000 to PB&J Family Services Therapeutic Preschools, which prevents and treats child abuse through an intensive, interactive parenting program for children in foster care or who are at risk of abuse and neglect.

The Daniels Fund operates the Daniels Fund Scholarship Program and the Daniels Fund Grants Program in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The Fund was established in 1997 by Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need.

Current projects include securing additional funding for Mission: Literacy, which provides free English as a Second Language and literacy tutoring to residents of Albuquerque’s far south valley near the Pajarito Mesa, and PB&J Family Services’ Heeling Hearts program, which brings unwanted shelter dogs and inmates together at the Women’s Correctional Facility in Grants, NM for therapy and training.

Through the direct service delivery of its clients, The Grant Plant contributes to the culture and well being of people throughout New Mexico. Sisters Erin Hielkema and Tara Gohr started the firm in 2003 in order to provide an affordable alternative for New Mexico nonprofits seeking to research and apply for grants for funding. They also contribute to increasing nonprofit capacity through  trainings on grant writing at the United Way Center for Nonprofit Excellence.

A recent internship program through a partnership with the University of New Mexico’s professional writing program trains emerging writers to work with New Mexico nonprofits in a variety of resource development activities.

Since inception, the firm has been extremely successful among the state’s numerous nonprofit agencies. Local nonprofits and other interested parties can contact Gohr and Hielkema to discuss their services at 505-839-1464 or through their website at www.thegrantplantNM.com.

New Mexico Nonprofits Increase Grant Success

Albuquerque, NM, 1/11/07 – Local nonprofit organizations that were assisted by The Grant Plant, a sister-owned small business in Albuquerque, received over $615,000 in foundation grants during 2008, bringing in money and technical assistance to deal with a multitude of issues faced by New Mexico families.

“The organizations that we work with do so much for our community,” notes Tara Gohr, co-owner of The Grant Plant, “that these grant awards are a testament to the compassion, resourcefulness, and business acumen that they use to improve others’ lives.”

Of special interest is a highly competitive grant from the Volunteer Impact Fund to the Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) Foundation. Funded by the UPS Foundation, Capital One, The Home Depot, and the AT&T Foundation, the Volunteer IMPACT Fund is a collaborative grant-making initiative to influence positive community change by helping organizations manage volunteers more effectively. The grant will be used by the CNM Foundation to expand the capacity of TAX HELP New Mexico, one of the most impactful and cost-effective free tax preparation programs in the nation. TAX HELP New Mexico depends on the efforts of two paid staff members and over 300 volunteers to infuse more than $21 million in tax refunds to the New Mexico community annually.

“We continue to have a number of grant requests pending from 2008,” stated Erin Hielkema, who, along with Tara, runs The Grant Plant from a home-based office. “We hope that once all the funding decisions are made to have reached our goal of bringing in $1,000,000 in funding to the state of New Mexico.”

PB&J Family Services and CNM Foundation Recipients of Grant Awards

Albuquerque, NM, 7/24/06 –Two local nonprofit organizations were named recipients of grants during the first quarter of 2008 that will better the quality of life in New Mexico. PB&J Family Services and the Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) Foundation were awarded funds in support of their services to New Mexicans.

PB&J Family Services was awarded two grants from the Children’s Trust Fund to support the Young Children’s Health Center Collaborative (YCHCC) and its Heads Up! program. The YCHCC is a new initiative being offered jointly by PB&J Family Services and the Young Children’s Health Center, a family-centered pediatric program serving primarily the Trumbull and La Mesa neighborhoods of Albuquerque. PB&J Family Services will provide comprehensive case management services to the families and children who receive medical care at the YCHC. The Heads Up! program is a school-based safety training program for middle school and high school girls to help them learn how to recognize and avoid danger. PB&J is a nonprofit organization that helps at-risk children to grow and develop to their full potential in nurturing families within a supportive community. The organization can be visited online at www.pbjfamilyservices.org.

The CNM Foundation was awarded a grant from the American Indian Education Foundation to support its emergency fund for Native American students. The emergency fund helps students cope with extenuating circumstances often surrounding collegiate life, such as being first-generation college students, cultural and living situation differences, and a general lack of financial resources. The CNM Foundation works to provide the extra financial assistance necessary for the citizens of CNM’s service area to obtain the educational opportunities they deserve. The Foundation can be visited online at http://www.cnm.edu/depts/tvifoundation/index.php.

“Both organizations are truly inspiring. The depth of their services and the commitment displayed by their staff are extraordinary,” says Tara Gohr of The Grant Plant, the agency that wrote the grant requests. View The Grant Plant’s website at www.thegrantplantNM.com.
