Captain Planet Foundation: ecoTech Grants

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to give the next generation of environmental stewards an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live. The Foundation funds and supports hands-on environmental projects that inspire and empower children and youth around the world as they work individually and collectively creating environmental solutions in their homes, schools, and communities.

ecoTech grants were created were created to combat the notion that students needed to choose between “the screen” or “the green” and to encourage educators and students to explore the role technology can play in designing and implementing solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges. The Foundation believes that technology can present innovative ways to address environmental challenges.

ecoTech Grants are offered to engage children in inquiry-based, STEM-related projects that leverage technology and/or use nature-based design to address environmental problems in local communities. ecoTech Grant projects must: be based in the U.S.; integrate the use of technology to address environmental problem (not just devices); be project-based; be youth-led; and result in demonstrable environmental outcomes.

Examples of previous ecoTech Grant funded projects have involved: the integration of robotics and sensors to explore water bodies, collect data, and organize clean-ups; the development of aquaponic and hydroponic systems using arduinos and remote sensing; renewable energy design challenges; biotechnology research; nature-based design applications; and many others.

Amount: Grants of up to $2,500 will be made. Preference is given to requests that have secured match or in-kind funding commitments to support projects.

Eligibility: Tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations, including most schools, that have an annual operating budget of less than $3 million.
