Con Alma Health Foundation: Technical Assistance Grants
Con Alma Health Foundation is organized to be aware of and respond to the health rights and needs of the culturally and demographically diverse peoples and communities of New Mexico. The Foundation seeks to improve the health status and access to health care services for all New Mexicans and advocates for a health policy, which will address the unmet health needs of all New Mexicans. Con Alma defines health broadly to include not only physical health, but also mental, emotional, behavioral, social, oral, environmental, economic, and spiritual health and well-being. This definition represents an approach to both individual and community well-being which impacts local and statewide health systems.
The Foundation’s Technical Assistance (TA) grants are designed to strengthen the nonprofit sector and address the need for capacity building and technical assistance both for the sector and among nonprofits in New Mexico. TA refers to the active engagement in skills building which builds the capacity of an organization, program, and/or collaborative effort to effectively fulfill its purpose and expand the capacity of the nonprofit sector. TA grants assist nonprofits, their programs, and/or their collaborative strategies that serve the community by building capacity, acquiring new skills, and increasing the effectiveness of the nonprofit sector.
Projects, initiatives, or organization’s that address and demonstrate the following are highly compelling:
- Focus on systems-oriented improvements, changes, or development.
- Involve collaborative efforts, particularly multi-sector collaboration (public and private, nonprofit and for-profit, multiple providers/services, etc.)
- Strengthen/increase the capacity of a nonprofit sector rather than that of a single organization. Consideration will be given when the capacity of an organization is critical to the well-being of a target population or community (e.g., rural, tribal, culturally diverse).
- Show funding support (including in-kind) from multiple sources.
Example technical assistance strategies include:
- Resource development: Identifying opportunities for joint grant applications with other nonprofits with shared goals, or collaboration on other resource opportunities (e.g., joint facility planning, back-office sharing, website, training, etc.).
- Human resource development: Human resource development and/or management activities for nonprofit sector or some aspect developed in collaboration or for the benefit of a broader audience (e.g., job classification and analysis, salary levels, benefit/pension plans, volunteer management, executive coaching, etc.).
- Executive transition: Development of Executive Director/CEO succession transition and/or search that include reflection and the sharing of lessons learned and best practices with other nonprofits in New Mexico with the intent to build capacity among sector.
- Community needs assessment: Collaborative efforts among a diverse range of organizations (multi-sector, multi-field, as appropriate), inclusive of community leadership and voices, to conduct a needs or ‘gaps’ assessment to determine and develop strategies that address needs and gaps between current conditions and desired conditions or community wants.
- Diversity/Inclusion assessment and planning: Develop and share strategies/tools with other nonprofits to identify and implement diversity, inclusion, assessment, and planning in a network.
- Training: Develop and conduct joint training opportunities for nonprofit organizations (e.g., general training for nonprofit sector on resource development, communications, budget/financial management, advocacy training).
- Innovation: Innovative thinking/programming (nonprofit sector requires thinking strategically vs. tactically). A strategic approach requires commitment to systems and processes that can create new solutions to old problems and to risk failure in order to succeed.
- Nonprofit standards of excellence and/or best practices: Development/adoption/implementation of standards of excellence for nonprofit sector (e.g., governance/leadership, ethics, transparency, accountability, legal compliance, governance, etc.).
- Community asset/resource mapping: Collaborative efforts among a diverse range of organizations (multi-sector, multifield, as appropriate), inclusive of community leadership and voices, to conduct an asset and/or resource mapping focused on what communities have to offer by identifying assets and resources that lead to specific goals and long-lasting systemic change and towards building on the strengths within a community.
- Leadership development – community teams and collaborations: TA engaged by community teams and collaborations (working groups) to build their capacity. The nature of the capacity may vary, including establishing the appropriate level and form of collaboration, meeting facilitation, and ensuring community input in vision and interests. Preference is given to community groups and organizations that have worked together and demonstrated successes in the past and that bring different strengths and diversity to the table.
Amount: Grants range from $5,000-$10,000.
Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations and organizations applying through a fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply.
Activities must occur (or benefit the people) in the state of New Mexico. An organization may apply for a TA grant even if it has applied separately for another grant cycle from the Foundation within the same year. An organization that has previously received a TA grant may apply for additional grants in subsequent years. However, successful recurring requests must show that the organization has built upon previous strategies. The Foundation generally will not consider ongoing funding for the same technical assistance activity.
Any organization working directly with pueblo or tribal communities/nations must submit a letter from those pueblos or tribes acknowledging support for the organization and the project that will be implemented.
Note about technical assistance providers: An applicant organization may use an individual consultant, nonprofit, or for-profit organization, or the applicant organization as the TA provider. However, it is recommended that if an outside provider is used, the applicant withhold a minimum of 10% for its direct costs and overhead.
