New Mexico Indian Affairs Department: Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Programs

The Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program provides funding to work toward the following goals:

  • To promote cessation and prevention of commercial tobacco abuse in Native communities with special emphasis on Native youth
  • To promote cultural awareness of Native traditional and ceremonial use of tobacco as a means to strengthen cultural identity and resistance to commercial tobacco

Amount: A total of $249,300 is available to award grants of up to $30,000 each. A total of $50,000 is earmarked for emerging tobacco cessation and prevention programs supporting tribal communities. Emerging programs are defined as commercial tobacco cessation and prevention programs that have been established for less than 12 months or will be developed if funding is made available to the program.

Eligibility: Native-serving nonprofit organizations; pueblos; tribes; or nations located in New Mexico.
