Paso Del Norte Health Foundation: IGNITE Initiative

Deadline: April 17, 2018

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation seeks to promote the IGNITE Initiative, which is aligned with the Foundation’s mission to promote health and prevent disease through leadership in health education, research, and advocacy. The purpose of this initiative is to get disconnected youth to become involved with at least one high-quality out of school program so as to increase their chances of growing-up healthy. The goals of IGNITE are:

  • To improve a range of health outcomes by engaging disconnected youth in the Paso del Norte Region in high-quality programs during out of school hours
  • To provide the Foundation and community with an opportunity to learn more about disconnected youth

Specifically, the Foundation will support out of school programs. Preference will be given to proposals that:

  • Are focused on disconnected youth
  • Serve youth between the ages 7-18 years old
  • Reach at least 100 new youth
  • Offer summer programming

The Foundation expects that out of school programs will embody the seven program quality characteristics and maintain a focus on increasing connection in the region. The seven indicators include:

  • Appropriate structure: Limit setting, clear and consistent rules and expectations, firm-enough control, continuity and predictability, clear boundaries, and age-appropriate monitoring
  • Community involvement: Concordance, coordination, and synergy among family, school, and community
  • Opportunities for skill building: Opportunities to learn physical, intellectual, psychological, emotional, and social skills; exposure to intentional learning experiences; opportunities to learn cultural literacies, media literacy, communication skills, and good habits of mind; preparation for adult employment; and opportunities to develop social and cultural capital
  • Physical and psychological safety: Safe and health-promoting facilities and practices that increase safe peer group interaction and decrease unsafe or confrontational peer interactions
  • Positive social norms: Rules of behavior, expectations, injunctions, ways of doing things, values and morals, and obligations for service
  • Supportive relationships: Warmth, closeness, connectedness, good communication, caring, support, guidance, secure attachment, and responsiveness
  • Youth involvement: Youth-based, empowerment practices that support autonomy, making a real difference in one’s community, and being taken seriously; practices that include enabling, responsibility granting, and meaningful challenge; and practices that focus on improvement rather than on relative current performance levels

Amount: Not specified.

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations, including churches and units of government, located in the Paso del Norte Region (El Paso and Hudspeth Counties in far west Texas, Doña Ana, Luna, and Otero Counties in southern New Mexico, and the municipality of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico).
