Project Learning Tree: GreenWorks! Grant Program

Project Learning Tree’s mission is to advance environmental literacy and promote stewardship through excellence in environmental education, professional development, and curriculum resources that use trees and forests as windows on the world. Project Learning Tree offers grants to engage students with their local community and complete service-learning, environmental-improvement projects. Students implement an action project they help design to green their school or to improve an aspect of their neighborhood’s environment.

Projects partner students with their whole school, local businesses and/or community organizations, and provide opportunities for student leadership. Funds can be used by students to implement recycling programs at their school, conserve water and energy, establish school gardens and outdoor classrooms, improve a forest, or restore a natural habitat, for example.

The proposed project must:

  • Incorporate service-learning
  • Exemplify student voice
  • Involve at least one community partner

Amount: Grants of up to $1,000 each will be awarded. Organizations must provide at least 50% in matched funds (in-kind acceptable).

Eligibility: Any organization, community group, nature center, museum, school, etc. that involves youth in environmental and/or conservation education. Applicants should attend an in-person or online training prior to applying (information available at the website).
