Region 9 Education Cooperative: New Mexico Civics CourseDeadline: November 22, 2019
Region IX Education Cooperative, on behalf of New Mexico Public Education Department, will support higher education institutions to provide for a one week high school civics course focusing on New Mexico state government for boys and girls to be held at postsecondary education institution(s) in New Mexico. The state’s social studies standards for 9th-12th grade include a component on civics and government, which asks that students understand the ideals, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship and understand the content and history of the founding documents of the United States with particular emphasis on the United States and New Mexico constitutions and how government functions at local, state, tribal, and national levels. Goals are:
- Expand civics focusing on New Mexico state government for New Mexico high schoolers
- Provide week long civics course to be held at post-secondary education institutions in New Mexico
- Teach students to understand how to exercise rights and responsibilities as citizens by participating in civic life and using skills that include interacting, monitoring, and influencing, including describing and analyzing the influence of public issues and the political system, evaluating candidates and their positions, and debating current issues
Amount: Professional service agreements will be awarded. The award is on a reimbursement basis.
Eligibility: New Mexico institutions of higher education, including community colleges.
