Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Sports Award

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Sports Award recognizes those in sport who have an innovative and collaborative approach to making their communities a healthier place to live. The Sports Award recognizes the ways in which sports influence healthy change in communities by helping children maintain a healthy weight; creating safe play environments; eliminating bullying, abuse, and violence; and expanding opportunities for children living in poverty.

Those eligible to apply are making communities healthier through sport in the following three categories:

  • Category 1: A professional sports team community relations department or foundation based in the United States or Canada
  • Category 2: An individual athlete or professional coach’s foundation based in the United States or Canada
  • Category 3: An organization in the United States or Canada that is an influential leader and model for others

The Foundation expects that applicants who are influential leaders will have significant reach and impact. These organizations should demonstrate a successful track record as a powerful voice for the importance of sports as a platform for community health and well-being.

Amount: An award of $7,500 may be made in each of the three categories above.

Eligibility: Professional sports teams or their foundations; athlete or coach foundations; and nonprofit organizations. Applicants that are not charitable organizations or public entities must apply with an organization that is such an entity.

For organizations that are a chapter within a larger organization, the umbrella organization is eligible to apply but individual chapters are not. National offices of affiliate organizations may feature the work of their local organizations in their application.
