U.S. Department of Agriculture: Rural Community Development Initiative

The Rural Community Development Initiative provides funding to help non-profit housing and community development organizations support housing, community facilities, and community and economic development projects in rural areas. Rural Community Development Initiative grants may be used for, but are not limited to:

  • Training sub-grantees to conduct: home-ownership education; minority business entrepreneur education
  • Providing technical assistance to sub-grantees on: strategic plan development; accessing alternative funding sources; board training; developing successful child care facilities; creating training tools, such as videos, workbooks, and reference guides; and effective fundraising techniques

Eligible areas must be rural, which includes cities, villages, townships, towns and Federally Recognized Tribal Lands outside the boundaries of a city of 50,000 or more and its immediately adjacent urbanized area.

Amount: Grants will range from $50,000-$250,000. Matching funds are required.

Eligibility: County governments; public and state controlled institutions of higher education; state governments; special district governments; Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized); city or township governments; for profit organizations; nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS; private institutions of higher education; public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; independent school districts; and small businesses.
