Con Alma Health Foundation

Con Alma Health Foundation is organized to be aware of and respond to the health rights and needs of the culturally and demographically diverse peoples and communities of New Mexico. The Foundation seeks to improve the health status and access to health care services for all New Mexicans and advocates for health policy that addresses the health needs of all in New Mexico. Con Alma defines health broadly to include not only physical health, but also mental, emotional, behavioral, social, oral, environmental, and spiritual health and well-being and has a focus on the needs of the uninsured/underinsured and the medically underserved. It works to advance health equity and reduce health disparities by promoting greater access to health care and improved quality of health care for all–with a special emphasis on people of color and rural and tribal communities.

Con Alma awards grants that engage in health systems strategies that address the needs and builds on the strengths of the diverse communities of New Mexico. The Foundation supports the identification, preservation, and communication of traditional practices that maintain, foster, and improve health status. Proposals that demonstrate the following have a higher chance of being funded:

  • A thorough understanding of Con Alma Health Foundation’s mission, funding priorities, and definitions of key grant making terms such as “health equity,” “systems change,” and “active vs. passive consultation.” The Foundation encourages applicants to learn more about these by looking at the Foundation’s website, and by reviewing grant guidelines and the report “Health Equity in New Mexico: A Roadmap for Grantmaking and Beyond.”
  • A shared value for collaboration within or across geographic areas or institutional sectors (government, nonprofit, private sector).
  • A focus on improving the health of underserved residents of New Mexico, including rural areas, communities of ethnic or other diversity, immigrants, veterans, etc.
  • A budget with support from multiple sources and a clear relationship between expenses and the goals stated in the application.

Note that the Foundation’s grant priorities do not include funding direct services; if a proposed project does involve some type of direct services, the applicant should explain how the services promote a goal more closely related to the Foundation’s priorities. Some examples include testing new methods of service delivery, creating different ways to bring people and services together, expanding availability to previously unserved populations, identifying unmet needs or issues posing problems in reaching specific people, etc.

Amount: Applicants must select one of the following fixed amounts and are encouraged to select whichever of $7,500, $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 available request amount best meets the organization’s needs.

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations and organizations applying through a fiscal sponsor. The purpose of the grant must benefit people living in New Mexico. Organizations working directly with pueblo or tribal communities/nations or within their jurisdictions must submit a letter of support from the tribe(s)/nation(s) involved as an attachment to the application.
