Dollar General Literacy Foundation: Adult Literacy Grants

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 in honor of Dollar General’s co-founder, J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate with only a third grade education. The organization funds literacy grants in five focus areas, one of which is Adult Literacy. Adult Literacy Grants award funding to nonprofit organizations that provide direct service to adults in need of literacy assistance. Organizations must provide help in one of the following instructional areas: (1) Adult Basic Education; (2) GED or high school equivalency preparation; and (3) English Language Acquisition.

Amount: Up to $15,000.

Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations with a valid IRS tax ID; K-12 Private or Public Schools; Colleges or Universities; Public Libraries. Organizations must provide direct services and be located within 20 miles of a Dollar General store (there are 62 Dollar General stores in NM). Organizations must be listed in the National Literacy Directory.
