Funders’ Network: Partners for Places

Partners for Places is a matching grant program that enhances local capacity to build equitable and sustainable communities in the United States and Canada. The fund does this by requiring local government and local foundation partnerships, and by pairing national and local philanthropic funding sources. These one-to-one matching awards support the planning and implementation of urban sustainability and green stormwater infrastructure projects.

Successful proposals are for planning processes or projects that local government sustainability leaders or water managers and local, place-based funders consider important to advancing sustainability goals in their communities. The project must either: (1) advance a key aspect of one of the plans listed below; or (2) support creation of one of the plans listed below.

Eligible plans include:

  • A community-focused sustainability, climate action, adaptation/resilience, equity, water, or comprehensive plan that specifically addresses sustainability, or urban sustainability and/or green stormwater infrastructure
  • Any multi-issue community plan that explicitly states and pursues the goal of integrating and/or balancing economic development, environmental quality, and equity

Amount: Approximately 4-7 projects will be supported with grants. One-year awards range from $25,000-$75,000; two-year grants range from $50,000-$100,000. Partners for Places grants require a one-to-one match by one or more local, place-based Foundations.

Eligibility: The proposal must consist of a team of these partners:

  • The sustainability director of a city or a county for general applicants, or a water director of a city, county, or utility for green infrastructure applicants
  • One or more local or regional place-based foundation(s)
