Native Americans in Philanthropy: #GenIndigenous Response Fund

Deadline: October 20, 2017

Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP) acts as a connector between grantmakers and Native organizations and communities. The #GenIndigenous Response Fund will provide responsive funding to support youth organizing and activism that requires immediate action. This new Response Fund will bridge funders and organizers to support youth organizing and a collective commitment to systemic change and social justice in Indigenous communities.

NAP has engaged and educated philanthropic leaders about the issues facing Native communities for the past 26 years. NAP believes that youth engagement, organizing, and leadership is central to this movement moment, therefore it will prioritize funding efforts that are Native and youth led.

Grantees should promote the advancement of Native human rights using nonviolent tactics or strategies. Projects should be focused on one of the following priority areas: strategic communications; education; workforce development; juvenile justice; resiliency; traditional knowledge; sustainability; environmental justice; health and well-being; and trauma and healing.

Preference will be given to groups that:

  • Demonstrate how they are responding to the current moment to build lasting youth power
  • Demonstrate a plan to win concrete policy victories and/or engage significant numbers of marginalized young people for the long term
  • Have a track record for successfully engaging young people in organizing for social justice
  • Engage 14-25 year-olds
  • Intergenerational collaborations between multiple organizations

Amount: Up to $5,000 per grant. Funds should generally be utilized within three to six months.

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status, or a fiscal sponsor. Grantees must be Native-led with a focus on engaging Native youth in advocacy efforts.
