U.S. Department of Agriculture: Rural Housing Preservation Grants

The Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) program provides qualified public agencies, private nonprofit organizations, and other eligible entities grant funds to assist very low- and low-income homeowners in repairing and rehabilitating their homes in rural areas. In addition, the HPG program assists rental property owners and cooperative housing complexes in repairing and rehabilitating their units if they agree to make such units available to low- and very low-income persons. Very-low-income is defined as below 50% of area median income; low-income is defined as 50-80% of area median income.

Applicants must have the necessary background and experience with proven ability to perform the responsibility of repair and rehabilitation of low-income housing. Eligible expenses include:

  • Repairing or replacing electrical wiring, foundations, roofs, insulation, heating systems and water/waste disposal systems
  • Handicap accessibility features
  • Labor and materials
  • Administrative expenses

Amount: Not provided.

Eligibility: State and local governmental entities; nonprofit organizations; and Federally recognized tribes.

Areas that may be served include rural areas and towns with 20,000 or fewer people.
